Doing the Upgrade Thing or 2008r2 standard to enterprise

So I found myself needing to upgrade 2008r2 server from Standard to Enterprise. Mostly for adding more that 4 Processors to the server. (VM based of course).

Found a neat way using DISM to do this:

Bat file:
DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerEnterprise /ProductKey:489J6-VHDMP-X63PK-3K798-CPX3Y

First thing comes to mind. Oh crap you just spilled your productkey. For shame.

Well I shared it but it is one of Microsoft’s generic keys located in Microsoft’s Take on this.

This is a way to test your install for “versions/editions”

To determine the installed edition, run:

“DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition”

To check the possible target editions, run:

“DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions”

Finally, to initiate an upgrade, run:

“DISM /online /Set-Edition:<edition ID> /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX”

Listed info from Microsoft blog

So it is quite easy. It does take a few minutes and a reboot. After that your in Enterprise heaven. *Note: this will increase the cost of your OS true up or licensing scheme.”
